Toilets, sinks and sewer pipes provided Henry Doulton a good
income, but they did not satisfy his creative intellect for very
long. Sometime in the 1860s, he began to show an interest in
artistic ceramics.
Doulton employed first students and then
graduates of the nearby Lambeth School of Art. Artists who
showed exceptional skills were often given a large measure of
creative freedom in their work, and many added a signature. Some
of these "Doulton Art Wares" are auctioned at vast sums today.
Doulton "Art Wares" were made until 1956.
This dish has raised gilding and painted orchids, all
done by hand.
